Blaine County Suicide Prevention Task Force
The 5B Suicide Prevention Alliance, comprised of Blaine County citizens and organizations is working to
prevent suicide and eliminate the stigma of mental health issues in our community.
To build a culture of awareness, understanding, acceptance, and action around our community’s mental
Our guiding principles:
Suicide prevention is a collaborative community effort. Suicide prevention is an active effort. Our efforts
must be sustainable, inclusive and focused on building strengths and resilience of individuals and
Our strategy is to build our community’s understanding of the many ways that suicide impacts our
community. We will raise up the partners in our community that are already working on projects that
support suicide prevention. We will also implement awareness campaigns and educational events that
share the facts, figures, stories, and the ripple effects of suicide in our community.
An example of the awareness efforts of the Alliance has been our introduction of the Know the Five Signs
campaign, supported by changedirection.org., an effort to educate community members how to
recognize that someone may be in emotional pain and may need help.
“We are at a crossroads when it comes to how our society addresses mental health. We know that one in
five of our citizens has a diagnosable mental health condition, and that more Americans are expected to
die this year by suicide than in car accidents. While many of us are comfortable acknowledging publicly
our physical suffering, for which we almost always seek help, many more of us privately experience
mental suffering, for which we almost never reach out.” (changedirection.org)
Please join us in our efforts to reduce stigma, create common language, connect people to helping
resources, and ultimately end suicides in our community. If someone in your life is struggling we
encourage you to connect, to reach out, to inspire hope, and to offer help.
